Introduction Intersectionality is a framework developed by legal scholar KimberlĂ© Crenshaw in the late 1980s to explain how different forms of oppression—such as racism , sexism , classism , and homophobia —intersect and shape people’s experiences. Rather than treating race, gender, or class as separate categories, intersectionality highlights how these identities overlap, creating unique and complex forms of discrimination and privilege. In the context of racial justice, this concept has transformed how activists, organizations, and policymakers approach social inequality. Understanding Intersectionality At its core, intersectionality recognizes that individuals cannot be reduced to a single identity. For example, a Black woman may face racial discrimination differently from a Black man or a white woman , as her experiences are shaped by both her race and gender.
